Kanata, Far Away follows Kanata and his two friends, Hikari and Masashi, who live in a rural town. The three have been close since childhood and dream of moving to Tokyo once they have saved enough money. Kanata and Masashi work at a factory, gradually putting money aside for their future. However, as they continue working toward their dream, unsettling circumstances begin to emerge around the three friends, threatening to disrupt their plans. The film is a quiet but emotional portrayal of young people trying to find a way forward while being held back by the circumstances surrounding them.
