A little boy is standing on a platform at the railway station in Malmö, looking at a steam locomotive that is going to leave for Simrishamn. The machinery starts moving, passengers board the train. Before the boy enters the car, his mother gives him his bag, hoping he will manage this trip on his own. The boy sits down and starts looking at the other passengers. He picks up his ticket and gives it to the conductor. The stoker shovels more coal into the firebox, while the train passes across the plain outside Lund. Peasants working in the fields look up, and so do various animals along the track. The train makes a short stop to be refilled with water. When it continues, the train driver suddenly sees a cat between the rails. He blows the hooter, but the cat doesn't move. When the train has passed, the cat is still between the rails, but unharmed.
