A Soviet intellectual is engaged in science and medicine, writing for himself. His only son decides to leave the country forever, breaking his heart and ruining his career and social standing. Having lost everything, he decides to write a novel about Dostoevsky, the subject he's been dreaming about his whole life. Like his beloved writer, he must lose completely in order to be reborn.
