A seriously injured man calls with his last strength for special investigator Alexander Haller. It's his friend and former colleague Scherf, who until recently was in prison for the murder of his wife. When Haller arrives at the hospital, the dying man can only offer him two enigmatic requests. A new case begins for Alexander, one that reawakens old doubts.
