Alex van Warmerdam is film- en theatermaker, dichter, schrijver en schilder. Naar aanleiding van de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in Eye Filmmuseum verschijnt L'histoire kaputt: een keuze uit zijn beeldend werk, installaties, stills uit zijn films, affiches, theaterstukken, toneelteksten en gedichten. Daarnaast heeft tijdschrift De Gids verschillende schrijvers en dichters benaderd wier werk getuigt van een vergelijkbare originaliteit, met de vraag om op Van Warmerdam te reageren. L'histoire kaputt is een eerbetoon aan de grimmige humor en de verbluffende verbeeldingskracht van een buitengewoon veelzijdig kunstenaar.
